Spring Winds: Kite Flying and Other Activities

Spring is in the air, and so is the wind! As the weather warms and children head back outside, those breezy afternoons offer a perfect excuse for some hands-on fun. From watching a kite dance across the sky to crafting colorful creations that spin and sway, wind-themed activities inspire curiosity, creativity, and a love for the outdoors.

Best of all, they turn an ordinary day into an adventure!

Let’s Go Fly a Kite

Nothing says spring quite like kite flying. There’s something magical about watching a bright, fluttering kite soar high above, powered by nothing more than the wind.

Head to a local park, an open field, or the beach, and let your child take the lead. It might take a few tries to get the kite airborne, but that’s part of the fun. Along the way, children build patience, coordination, and confidence.

Want to make it extra special? Decorate your own kite before takeoff and turn the outing into a creative project from start to finish.

Make Your Own Pinwheels

Pinwheels are simple, colorful, and endlessly entertaining. They’re also a fantastic way to help children see the wind in action.

With just paper, a pencil, and a push pin, you can create a cheerful toy that spins with every breeze. Take them outside and compare how fast they turn on gusty days versus gentle ones. It’s a playful introduction to basic science (and a lot of fun.)

Create Wind Catchers

Turn a breezy day into an art project by making DIY wind catchers. Ribbons, beads, paper plates, and even recycled materials can be transformed into beautiful decorations that dance in the wind.

Hang them from a porch, tree branch, or window and watch them come to life. Children will love seeing their artwork move and shimmer outdoors, adding a splash of color to the season.

Chase Bubbles in the Breeze

Blowing bubbles on a windy spring day feels a little bit like magic. Instead of floating gently, bubbles twist, swirl, and race through the air, creating a mesmerizing show.

Encourage children to notice how the wind changes their path and speed. It’s simple, joyful fun that doubles as a mini science lesson, without feeling like one.

Experiment with the Wind

Spring breezes are perfect for easy, hands-on learning. Try a few simple activities to explore how air moves:

  • Fly paper airplanes and see which design travels the farthest.
  • Race balloons across the yard using only the wind or your breath.
  • Make a homemade anemometer to measure wind speed.

These playful experiments spark curiosity while sneaking in a bit of STEM learning.

Dance and Play in the Wind

Sometimes the best activity is the simplest one. Grab scarves, streamers, or ribbons and encourage your child to run, spin, and dance with the breeze. It’s a wonderful sensory experience that promotes movement, imagination, and pure joy.

You can even ask fun questions along the way:

“Can you move like the wind?”

“Is today’s breeze gentle or strong?”

Soak Up the Spring Season

Spring winds bring more than fresh air; they bring opportunities for exploration and discovery and encourage creativity, confidence, and a deeper connection to nature.

At Adventurous Child, we believe every day holds the potential for adventure. So step outside, feel the breeze, and let your child’s imagination take flight.

We strive to create fun and informative content that will help young children learn and grow.
