40 Years of Outdoor Adventure in Early Childhood Education

In 2026, The Adventurous Child is celebrating 40 years of helping schools and centers turn outdoor spaces into vibrant places to play, learn, and grow. What started as a passion for getting young children outside has grown into a trusted partner for early childhood programs across Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and beyond.

Over the decades, one thing has never changed: our belief that children learn best when they are surrounded by nature, moving their bodies, and following their curiosity. Outdoor play isn’t a “nice to have” add‑on to the school day; it is a vital part of early childhood education.

How It Started: A Simple Idea With Big Impact

Nearly 40 years ago, The Adventurous Child began with a simple idea: to create preschool playgrounds that do more than entertain. Our founders saw that outdoor spaces could become true learning environments, where every climb, scoop, and splash supports development.

From those early days, we focused on:

  • Designing equipment for young children with their unique needs in mind.
  • Blending natural materials and thoughtful layouts to invite exploration, not just “use the slide and go back inside.”
  • Partnering with educators to align outdoor play with learning goals, rather than treating the playground as separate from the classroom.

What began as local projects has grown into outdoor classrooms and playgrounds shipped nationwide, all crafted in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Growing With Schools, Centers, and Communities

Over 40 years, early childhood education has evolved, and so have playgrounds. Yet our mission remains the same: inspire outdoor learning through play. Today, we support programs with:

  • Outdoor classrooms that bring lessons into the fresh air, complete with stations for literacy, math, science, and art.
  • Natural playgrounds that encourage climbing, digging, balancing, and imaginative play, so children build confidence and gross motor skills.
  • Infant and toddler spaces designed to support early motor, social, and sensory development in safe, age‑appropriate ways.
  • Art, music, sand, and water elements that fuel creativity and sensory-rich exploration.

Every project is still custom‑designed and built from our warehouse, using high‑quality materials and detailed plans so your space works for your staff, your site, and your children.

Play With Purpose: Learning Built Into Every Design

Outdoor play is joyful, but it is also powerful. Our equipment is designed with Early Learning Standards in mind, so every space supports whole‑child development.

When you walk into one of our playgrounds, you’ll see:

  • STEM-based learning embedded in simple, hands-on experiences like building, pouring, measuring, and problem‑solving.
  • Creative expression through outdoor easels, music elements, and dramatic play areas where children can tell stories, experiment with sound, and act out the world around them.
  • Physical development supported by climbers, slides, and fitness components that help children build strength, coordination, balance, and confidence.
  • Sensory-rich experiences with sand, water, textures, and sounds that invite children to notice, compare, and explore.

Our Certified Playground Safety Inspectors and designers carefully consider safety, accessibility, and layout, so you can focus on teaching while children explore with confidence.

Inclusive, Safe, Accessible Spaces for Every Child

For 40 years, we’ve believed that outdoor learning spaces should welcome every child. That is why inclusivity and safety are built into everything we create. Our team:

  • Designs inclusive outdoor classrooms so children of all abilities can play, learn, and connect side by side.
  • Follows rigorous safety and accessibility guidelines, with products created by Certified Playground Safety Inspectors.
  • Provides clear installation instructions and support, helping your team bring the design to life on your site.

The result is an outdoor environment where families feel confident, educators feel supported, and children feel free to take healthy risks, practice new skills, and grow.

A Message of Thanks From Our Team

As we celebrate our 40th year, we are grateful for the schools, centers, faith‑based programs, and communities that have trusted us with their outdoor spaces. Every project represents real children discovering the joy of learning outside, and that is why we do what we do.

Our president sums it up best: leading a team dedicated to improving the lives of children, educators, and communities through outdoor learning is both an honor and a responsibility. We are proud to continue that work as we look toward the next 40 years of adventurous play.

The Next Generation of Outdoor Classrooms

The needs of children and educators continue to evolve, and we’re evolving with them. From new approaches to natural play to expanded STEM and sensory experiences, we are continually designing products and layouts that respond to today’s classrooms and tomorrow’s learners.

If you are planning a new preschool playground or outdoor classroom, or refreshing an existing space, we would love to be part of your next chapter. Contact us to talk through your goals, your site, and your budget, and we’ll work together to create an outdoor space where curiosity, creativity, and adventure can flourish.

We strive to create fun and informative content that will help young children learn and grow. However, it's important to keep in mind that all activities should be performed under the supervision of an adult. The Adventurous Child website is intended to serve as a reference and guidance for educational activities, and it is ultimately the responsibility of the parent, guardian, and/or educator to determine the appropriateness of the activity for their child’s age and maturity level. Thank you for your understanding and support!
